  1. Measurement of multijet azimuthal correlations and determination of the strong coupling in proton-proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$

    A measurement is presented of a ratio observable that provides a measure of the azimuthal correlations among jets with large transverse momentum $$p_{\textrm{T}}$$. This observable is measured in multijet events over the range of $$p_{\textrm{T}} = 360$$–$$3170\,\text {Ge}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V} $$ based on data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$$\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 134$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$. The results are compared with predictions from Monte Carlo parton-shower event generator simulations, as well as with fixed-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) predictions at next-to-leading-order (NLO) accuracy obtained with different parton distribution functionsmore » (PDFs) and corrected for nonperturbative and electroweak effects. Data and theory agree within uncertainties. From the comparison of the measured observable with the pQCD prediction obtained with the NNPDF3.1 NLO PDFs, the strong coupling at the Z boson mass scale is $$\alpha _\textrm{S} (m_{{\textrm{Z}}}) =0.1177 \pm 0.0013\, \text {(exp)} _{-0.0073}^{+0.0116} \,\text {(theo)} = 0.1177_{-0.0074}^{+0.0117}$$, where the total uncertainty is dominated by the scale dependence of the fixed-order predictions. A test of the running of $$\alpha _\textrm{S}$$ in the $$\,\text {Te}\hspace{-.08em}\text {V}$$ region shows no deviation from the expected NLO pQCD behaviour.« less
  2. Constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings from its production and decay using the WW channel in proton–proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 13~\text {TeV}$$

    A study of the anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons, including $${\textit{CP}}$$-violation effects, has been conducted using its production and decay in the WW channel. This analysis is performed on proton–proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC during 2016–2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138$$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$$. The different-flavor dilepton $$({\textrm{e}} {{\upmu }})$$ final state is analyzed, with dedicated categories targeting gluon fusion, electroweak vector boson fusion, and associated production with a W or Z boson. Kinematic information from associated jets is combined using matrix elementmore » techniques to increase the sensitivity to anomalous effects at the production vertex. A simultaneous measurement of four Higgs boson couplings to electroweak vector bosons is performed in the framework of a standard model effective field theory. All measurements are consistent with the expectations for the standard model Higgs boson and constraints are set on the fractional contribution of the anomalous couplings to the Higgs boson production cross section.« less
  3. Search for Higgs boson pair production in the $$ \textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}{\textrm{W}}^{+}{\textrm{W}}^{-} $$ decay mode in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV

    A search for Higgs boson pair (HH) production with one Higgs boson decaying to two bottom quarks and the other to two W bosons are presented. The search is done using proton-proton collisions data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$$^{−1}$$ recorded by the CMS detector at the LHC from 2016 to 2018. The final states considered include at least one leptonically decaying W boson. No evidence for the presence of a signal is observed and corresponding upper limits on the HH production cross section are derived. The limit on the inclusivemore » cross section of the nonresonant HH production, assuming that the distributions of kinematic observables are as expected in the standard model (SM), is observed (expected) to be 14 (18) times the value predicted by the SM, at 95% confidence level. The limits on the cross section are also presented as functions of various Higgs boson coupling modifiers, and anomalous Higgs boson coupling scenarios. In addition, limits are set on the resonant HH production via spin-0 and spin-2 resonances within the mass range 250–900 GeV.[graphic not available: see fulltext]« less
  4. Search for long-lived heavy neutral leptons decaying in the CMS muon detectors in proton-proton collisions at s =13TeV

    A search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) decaying in the CMS muon system is presented. A data sample is used corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 of proton-proton collisions at s =13TeV , recorded at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018. Decay products of long-lived HNLs could interact with the shielding materials in the CMS muon system and create hadronic and electromagnetic showers detected in the muon chambers. This distinctive signature provides a unique handle to search for HNLs with masses below 4 GeV and proper decay lengths of the order of meters.more » The signature is sensitive to HNL couplings to all three generations of leptons. Candidate events are required to contain a prompt electron or muon originating from a vertex on the beam axis and a displaced shower in the muon chambers. No significant deviations from the standard model background expectation are observed. In the electron (muon) channel, the most stringent limits to date are set for HNLs in the mass range of 2.1–3.0 (1.9–3.3) GeV, reaching mixing matrix element squared values as low as 8.6(4.6)×10 - 6 .« less
  5. Search for a scalar or pseudoscalar dilepton resonance produced in association with a massive vector boson or top quark-antiquark pair in multilepton events at s =13TeV

    A search for beyond the standard model spin-0 bosons, ϕ , that decay into pairs of electrons, muons, or tau leptons is presented. The search targets the associated production of such bosons with a W or Z gauge boson, or a top quark-antiquark pair, and uses events with three or four charged leptons, including hadronically decaying tau leptons. The proton-proton collision data set used in the analysis was collected at the LHC from 2016 to 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 more » . The observations are consistent with the predictions from standard model processes. Upper limits are placed on the product of cross sections and branching fractions of such new particles over the mass range of 15 to 350 GeV with scalar, pseudoscalar, or Higgs-boson-like couplings, as well as on the product of coupling parameters and branching fractions. Several model-dependent exclusion limits are also presented. For a Higgs-boson-like ϕ model, limits are set on the mixing angle of the Higgs boson with the ϕ boson. For the associated production of a ϕ boson with a top quark-antiquark pair, limits are set on the coupling to top quarks. Finally, limits are set for the first time on a fermiophilic dilaton-like model with scalar couplings and a fermiophilic axion-like model with pseudoscalar couplings.« less
  6. Evidence for tWZ production in proton-proton collisions at s =13 TeV in multilepton final states

    The first evidence for the standard model production of a top quark in association with a W boson and a Z boson is reported. The measurement is performed in multilepton final states, where the Z boson is reconstructed via its decays to electron or muon pairs. At least one W boson, associated or from top quark decay, decays leptonically, too. The analysed data were recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018 in proton-proton collisions at s =13 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The measured crossmore » section is 354±54(stat)±95(syst) fb, and corresponds to a statistical significance of 3.4 standard deviations.« less
  7. Search for pair production of scalar and vector leptoquarks decaying to muons and bottom quarks in proton-proton collisions at s =13TeV

    A search for pair production of scalar and vector leptoquarks (LQs) each decaying to a muon and a bottom quark is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at s =13TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 . No excess above standard model expectation is observed. Scalar (vector) LQs with masses less than 1810 (2120) GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a 100% branching fraction of the LQ decaying to a muon and a bottom quark. These limits represent the most stringent to date.
  8. Search for stealth supersymmetry in final states with two photons, jets, and low missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at s =13TeV

    The results of a search for stealth supersymmetry in final states with two photons and jets, targeting a phase space region with low missing transverse momentum ( p T miss ), are reported. The study is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb - 1 . As LHC results continue to constrain the parameter spacemore » of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, the low p T miss regime is increasingly valuable to explore. To estimate the backgrounds due to standard model processes in such events, we apply corrections derived from simulation to an estimate based on a control selection in data. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified stealth supersymmetry models with gluino and squark pair production. The observed data are consistent with the standard model predictions, and gluino (squark) masses of up to 2150 (1850) GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level.« less
  9. Search for a third-generation leptoquark coupled to a τ lepton and a b quark through single, pair, and nonresonant production in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV

    A search is presented for a third-generation leptoquark (LQ) coupled exclusively to a τ lepton and a b quark. The search is based on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$$^{−1}$$. Events with τ leptons and a varying number of jets originating from b quarks are considered, targeting the single and pair production of LQs, as well as nonresonant t-channel LQ exchange. An excess is observed in the data with respect to the background expectation in the combined analysis of all search regions. Formore » a benchmark LQ mass of 2 TeV and an LQ-b-τ coupling strength of 2.5, the excess reaches a local significance of up to 2.8 standard deviations. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are placed on the LQ production cross section in the LQ mass range 0.5–2.3 TeV, and up to 3 TeV for t-channel LQ exchange. Leptoquarks are excluded below masses of 1.22–1.88 TeV for different LQ models and varying coupling strengths up to 2.5. The study of nonresonant ττ production through t-channel LQ exchange allows lower limits on the LQ mass of up to 2.3 TeV to be obtained.[graphic not available: see fulltext]« less
  10. Development of the CMS detector for the CERN LHC Run 3

    Since the initial data taking of the CERN LHC, the CMSexperiment has undergone substantial upgrades and improvements. Thispaper discusses the CMS detector as it is configured for the thirddata-taking period of the CERN LHC, Run 3, which started in2022. The entire silicon pixel tracking detector was replaced. A newpowering system for the superconducting solenoid was installed. Theelectronics of the hadron calorimeter was upgraded. All the muonelectronic systems were upgraded, and new muon detector stationswere added, including a gas electron multiplier detector. Theprecision proton spectrometer was upgraded. The dedicated luminositydetectors and the beam loss monitor were refurbished. Substantialimprovements to the trigger, datamore » acquisition, software, andcomputing systems were also implemented, including a new hybridCPU/GPU farm for the high-level trigger.« less
